How to Have Your Cake and Eat it Too This Holiday Season

Aftera close inspection of our professional development calendar, and a peek at next year’s desk calendar — still wrapped in cellophane — we’ve finalized our holiday schedule and office hours here at BioDesign Wellness Center.
Here’s what you need to know:
- We will be closed, beginning Saturday, Dec. 22, for some advanced training and a well-deserved holiday break for all of our doctors, nutritionists, health coaches and back office staff.
- We will reopen at 9 a.m. sharp on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019.
If you have a need to call our Tampa Functional Medicine practice with any important or urgent health issues over the holidays, our answering service will be taking messages and we will return calls Dec. 27 & 28. If you have a medical emergency, please do not call BioDesign Wellness. Instead, call 911 or go directly to the emergency room.
We are so grateful for our patients
Now that we’ve got all that out of the way, we wish you and your families a fantastic holiday season and a healthy and happy New Year! We were just talking about the past year and reflecting on the hundreds of patients who became empowered to take charge of their own health by making permanent lifestyle changes in 2018. We’d certainly like to take credit for some of that improvement, but it’s truly you — our ambitious patients — who did the heavy lifting.
And speaking of diets, the holidays always present the opportunity to forego your exercise and eating regimen in exchange for unhealthy foods or beverages that magically appear at nearly every gathering you attend during the next few weeks. Because we care so much about your health and wellbeing, below is information on supplements that can often alleviate some of the suffering, bloating or indigestion you’re likely to experience as a result of poor food and drink choices.
Keeping in mind that moderation is the key, here are some items you can take when you do overindulge — and right now, we’re offering a 20 percent discount on each of these:

Well prepared is well armed
Steering back to the moderation model we mentioned above, you don’t necessarily have to grab the biggest portion of meat on the platter, nor do you need to drink a six pack of beer when you could just nurse one or two. And remember that the foods and alcohol you do consume contain plenty of sugars, so you might limit — or even bypass — the dessert table.
Here are several “advanced planning” suggestions for your holiday party participation:
- Stay hydrated. If you drink alcohol, think about consuming a glass of water between each drink. And you might consider using electrolytes — which we sell in our office — in order to remain hydrated.
- Avoid chips and snacks containing processed meats — not only because they are fattening. These have oils that can really promote weight gain and clog the arteries.
- Pay attention to the salad dishes — they’re usually delicious, filling and so much better for you. And remember that potato and pasta salads aren’t really “salads” in the larger scheme of things.
Making up for “lost” time
After a week or so of heavy social activity, you’re probably going to find yourself looking forward to a good workout. So, hit the gym, the pool or the track. A good sweaty workout will help you detox, as will drinking copious amounts of water with electrolytes. And keep on taking those supplements, probiotics and vitamins to restore your overall health.
